Hillsborough County
Accountant Serving Tampa, Florida
Soham Accounting serves Tampa and the wider Bay area, working with individuals, families, and small businesses on tax preparation, bookkeeping, payroll, and the questions that come up in between.
When a return turns into a notice, we deal with the IRS rather than handing the problem back to you — Form 2848 filed so correspondence comes to us, transcripts pulled to see what the IRS actually holds, and a written response prepared. That work runs by correspondence and phone, which is how most examinations run regardless of geography.
Working in Tampa
A metro where compensation is rarely just a salary
Tampa’s technology, healthcare, and finance employers pay a large share of compensation through equity, bonuses, and deferred plans. Those are the line items consumer software handles least well — restricted stock reported with no cost basis, an ESPP discount taxed twice, a bonus withheld at a flat rate that bears no relation to the eventual marginal rate.
Where preparation usually falls short
Most problems on a return are not arithmetic. They are a question nobody asked — whether a side business should have been an S corporation two years ago, whether a rental was reported on the right schedule, whether a move between states split the year correctly. Nothing on the return looks wrong, so nothing prompts a second look.
Small business across the Bay
Hillsborough applies its own discretionary sales surtax rate, distinct from those in Pasco and Hernando. Businesses operating across county lines, or shipping between them, deal with several — and the rate generally follows the delivery address rather than where the business sits.
Representation without a downtown office
IRS examinations are largely conducted by correspondence, phone, and video regardless of geography. Representation is about the credential and the work, not proximity to a federal building.
Tampa consultant paying self-employment tax on everything
A consultant working for Tampa-area clients had been filing as a sole proprietor for four years, with net profit in the range where entity choice starts to matter.
Every dollar of profit was running through self-employment tax. No reasonable-compensation analysis had ever been done, and no one had raised whether an S corporation election would change the outcome.
None of the previous returns were wrong. The question simply had not been asked.
What gets filed: Entity choice modelled against actual profit rather than a rule of thumb, an S corporation election made with a defensible salary figure, and payroll set up to support it. The prior years were reviewed and left as filed, because they were correct.
Illustration only — not a real client. Figures are chosen to show how the rule applies.

Common questions
Are you located in Tampa?
No — the practice is based in Spring Hill, north of the Bay area in Hernando County, and serves Tampa clients remotely: encrypted document exchange, video meetings, and electronic signature. In-person meetings can be arranged when something genuinely warrants one.
I received an IRS notice. What happens first?
We read it properly and identify the response deadline before anything else, because some notices carry windows that protect specific rights — letting one close can turn an arguable position into a settled liability. Then transcripts are pulled to see what the IRS actually holds on your account, which is often not what the notice implies. Most notices are narrower than they look.
My compensation includes stock. Does that change anything?
Usually yes, and usually in your favour once it is handled properly. Restricted stock and ESPP shares are frequently reported by brokers without the cost basis that payroll already taxed, which overstates the gain. It is worth reviewing prior years as well as the current one.
Do you work with Tampa small businesses too?
Yes — bookkeeping, payroll, sales tax, and entity returns. Hillsborough has its own discretionary surtax rate, and businesses operating across the county lines into Pasco or Hernando deal with more than one.
